If you’re thinking to yourself “wait, this looks familiar” – you’re completely right! This past summer I designed a small Rainbow Flower amigurumi pattern for Pride month. My cousin loved the flower, and asked if I could make a rattle version for their baby. Of course, I jumped at the excuse to make something cute for my adorable cousin-niece! (technically first cousin once removed, but that’s a mouthful and I have no siblings of my own… so I am unofficial auntie and she is my unofficial niece)
My cousin prefers not to have pictures of her daughter online (understandable!) so I have no pictures of her holding the rattle. But trust me when I saw she is adorable and squishy and I love her. <3 Her smile and giggle are so infectious, and she’s the first baby in our family in nearly 30 years so we are all over the moon and can’t get enough of her!
I’m excited to put my first ever baby toy out into the world, and I hope this baby rattle will make the little ones in your life smile too!
Although the original rainbow flower pattern had a smiley face, I chose not to give this rattle a face. Safety eyes aren’t safe for young babies, and I didn’t like how it looked when I embroidered a face on. However, you can definitely add one if you wish!

Rainbow Flower Baby Rattle Amigurumi Pattern
Brighten up your nursery with this cute and colourful amigurumi Rainbow Flower Baby Rattle!

Supplies Needed
- Worsted weight yarn (Red Heart Super Saver or similar): Cherry Red, Pumpkin, Bright Yellow, Paddy Green, Blue, Medium Purple, Pretty ‘n Pink, Pale Yellow
- Size F / 3.75mm crochet hook – I recommend the ergonomic Clover Amour hooks
- 2 large of 4 small rattle inserts – I used ones similar to these. They are small (22mm) so I used 4 in total (2 each in the flower and the handle).
- Fiberfill stuffing
- Yarn needle
- Scissors & pins
- Stitch marker – I recommend locking stitch markers
Terms & Abbreviations
All details below are based on US crochet terms.
- Mc: Magic Circle
- Ch: Chain
- Sl: Slip Stitch
- Sc: Single Crochet
- Inc: Increase
- Dec: Decrease – I recommend using the Invisible Decrease
Pattern Notes
You will be working in a continuous spiral throughout the pattern. Use a stitch marker and do not join rounds or turn (unless otherwise stated).
When reading the pattern, (_,_)*x means that you repeat the instructions in the bracket “x” number of times. For example, (Sc 1, Inc)*6 means to repeat (Sc 1, Inc) 6 times. The number in brackets at the end of each row is the total number of stitches you will have when you finish that row.
Pattern Instructions
Middle of Flower
Using light yellow:
Round 1: Sc 6 in a a Magic Circle
Round 2: Inc*6 (12)
Round 3: (Sc 1, Inc)*6 (18)
Round 4: (Sc 2, Inc)*6 (24)
Rounds 5-9: Sc around (24)
Round 10: (Sc 2, Dec)*6 (18)
Insert the rattle and begin stuffing the flower. If the rattle inserts are small, I recommend using 2 of them.
Round 11: (Sc 1, Dec)*6 (12)
Round 12: Dec*6 (6)
Finish stuffing the flower, then finish off and weave in the ends.
Petals (Make 7)
I made one petal each in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and pink. You can use any colours you prefer, though!
Using petal colour:
Round 1: Sc 6 in a Magic Circle
Round 2: (Sc 1, Inc, Inc)*2 (10)
Round 3: (Sc 2, Inc, Inc, Sc 1)*2 (14)
Round 4: (Sc 6, Inc)*2 (16)
Round 5: Sc around (16)
Round 6: Sc 3, Dec, Sc 6, Dec, Sc 3 (14)
Round 7: Sc 3, Dec, Sc 5, Dec, Sc 2 (12)
Round 8: Sc around (12)
Round 9: Sc 2, Dec, Sc 4, Dec, Sc 2 (10)
Round 10: Sc 2, Dec, Sc 3, Dec, Sc 1 (8)
Finish off, leaving a long end – do not close up the hole. Weave in the end from Round 1 (the tip of the petal). Stuff the petal.
Handle
Using green:
Round 1: Sc 6 in a Magic Circle
Round 2: Inc*6 (12)
Round 3: (Sc 1, Inc)*6 (18)
Round 4: (Sc 2, Inc)*6 (24)
Rounds 5-9: Sc around (24)
Round 10: (Sc 1, Dec)*8 (16)
Stuff bottom of handle and add a rattle insert (or 2 inserts if they are small). Continue to firmly stuff the handle as you make it.
Rounds 11-32: Sc around (16)
Finish off, leaving a long end – do not close up the hole. Weave in the end from Round 1 (this will be the bottom of the handle). Finish stuffing the handle, making sure it is firm at the top so it won’t be too floppy where it attaches to the flower.
Assembling the Flower
Pin the petals around the middle of the flower. I sewed the petals on between rounds 4 and 5 so they are closer to the front of the ball rather than the middle. That way the handle will fit behind the petals. I recommend pinning all 7 petals in place before sewing any of them down, so you can make sure they are situated as you want them. Once you’re happy with the positioning of the petals, sew them into place.
Pin the handle it to the back of the flower. I situated the flower so it’s tilting up a bit, so the handle fits behind the petals. Sew the handle into place.
And you’re done!
