Release the kraken! I am currently obsessed with a certain gay pirate show on HBO, and I decided to celebrate my love for Blackbeard and the Gentleman Pirate with my latest pattern: Ed the Kraken! Ed seems like a big scary sea monster whose mighty tentacles tears ships apart, but really he just wants a hug. And this amigurumi kraken is very, very huggable! At over 2 feet tall and made from soft bulky yarn, Ed is perfect for cuddling (make sure to also tell him he’s a very good kraken who deserves fine things). And you can wrap his tentacles around you so it’s like he’s hugging you back! No, I’m not lonely, why do you ask.

Ed the Kraken was my first giant/bulky amigurumi pattern, and I loved making him. It’s super fun and satisfying to see how quickly a pattern like this works up. You will need approximately 450 yards each of velvet/chenille Super Bulky #6 yarn in the main colour and the tentacle underside colour, and a ton of stuffing. Like, more stuffing than you think you will need. If you think you have enough stuffing? Get more stuffing. This big boy needs a lot of it!

Supplies Needed

  • Super Bulky/#6 chenille/velvet yarn (Loops & Threads Sweet Snugglies Lite, Premier Yarns Parfait Chunky, or similar): Purple (~450 yds) and light pink (~450 yds) or preferred colours. I used 2 each of the L&T Sweet Snugglies Lite and just barely had enough, and those come with 218 yds each.
