I designed these patterns for a crochet blog hop this Spring, which had a theme of “parents”. I thought, how cute would it be to have the butterfly as the parent and the caterpillar as the baby who is going to grow up one day into that beautiful butterfly? And me being me, of course, I had to make them rainbow. 🙂 

We haven’t had much of a Spring in Vancouver this year – in fact, it’s been the coldest May on record, apparently! But awhile back we had a rare nice day and I was excited to take these two on a photo walk around the beautiful cherry blossom trees that pop up around the city each year. Check out some of my photos from that walk below. Poor caterpillar fell off the tree branch at one point and I had to climb over a short wall to retrieve them lol. The perils of crochet photography!

Both patterns are quite easy to make and suitable for beginners. The caterpillar is made with limited sewing required – the body and legs are all one piece, made with increases, decreases, and bobble legs. Only the head and antennae have to be sewn on. And of course you can make these two any colours you want – rainbow, solid, or another combination of colours. Up to you!
