We Know Nothing: Monologues of Ice and Fire Pictures

Last weekend I went to see We Know Nothing: Monologues of Ice and Fire, a Vancouver-produced comedy show featuring my blanket! The show was very entertaining and lovingly poked fun at Game of Thrones. My blanket got to hang out on stage for the entire show, draped over the chair that seated ‘George RR Martin’. Well the actor playing him, at any rate – I can only dream that one day the real one would sit on it. 😉 Anyway, I got a few pictures after the show of me with my Jon & Daenerys dolls sitting in the chair, plus there’s some official photos below of ‘George’ in the chair (thanks to the producer Keegan for sending me these!).

Photo shoot on stage after the show!

Game of Thrones Blanket Pattern complete

I’ve finished uploading the grid patterns for my Game of Thrones blanket, so if you want to make you’re own then you’re all set now! Below are the rest of the houses (I posted Stark, Lannister, and Baratheon previously), and you can find them all plus instructions on my patterns page. Enjoy, and if you download one of them then I’d love to hear! Also, if there are any problems with any of the links or patterns please let me know.

Julia’s Gallery Updates – due South

Continuing the gallery updates, due South! I realize this probably seems oddly out of place to most people – but
due South was my main fandom for a couple of years and I love it so very
much. Before I started crocheting I sewed the occasional doll
from fabric, and so naturally when I fell hard into this fandom in early
2010 I immediately had to make dolls. Then a few months later I started
crocheting, so what’s a girl to do? I made more due South dolls. I
stopped myself short of making all three leads in the big doll style,
but I still ended up with 3 fabric dolls, 3 small dolls, and 1 big Ray
Kowalski. Because RayK. <3

The original Fraser!doll. I wanted to make him a hat but couldn’t figure out how… so he is hat-less.
However, his belts and jacket come off so you can see his suspenders!
And the original Ray Kowalski doll. 🙂

The original RayVecchio doll
Fraser with his first Ray. 🙂

Fraser with his second Ray (living in a cabin in Canada together forever <3)
My boys all together, because OT3 works too. <3

Fast forward about a year, and it’s crochet time! I was trying to go for a kinda beanie baby look (they actually are filled with little plastic beans), but it didn’t quite work out as I had hoped. Oh well. And still no hat for Fraser, I couldn’t figure out how to make a little crochet Mountie hat. I could probably figure something out now, but doubt I’ll ever get around to it.

And Fraser and RayV <3

Big RayK doll! Because I needed a cuddly Ray Kowalski. Made based on Pixelated Mushroom’s pattern.

Three RayK dolls… that’s not too many, right?

The due South cube in  my display cube in my living room (where I keep most of my action figures, Funko Pops, and random crochet dolls). The 4 ornaments were made with yarn and plastic mesh a few years back – including a festive Dief! And the little felt Fraser and big!RayK is cuddling was made by a friend of mine for my birthday. Little Fraser is also sitting in an RCMP mug that I got… somewhere. I think it was when I went to the Yukon in 2012.

My Game of Thrones blanket is going on tour! (not really)

My Game of Thrones blanket is going on tour! Well, not really, but it
will be featured in the upcoming Vancouver stage comedy “We Know Nothing
– Monologues of Ice and Fire”. Come check it out at the Cultch Theatre
November 13-15! I’ll be there on Saturday to see the show and watch my
blanket in its stage debut (spoiler, it’s playing the role of a
blanket). My friend Anne is helping to organize it and asked if they could borrow the blanket, and it’s a great chance for exposure so I’m happy to do it. I’ll post pictures afterwards!

Check it out on Facebook and buy tickets here.

Crochet Hatsune Miku

Switching gears from updating old dolls to my gallery, here’s a quick post with one of my most recent projects. My friend Alan’s birthday was last week, and he’s a big fan of the Japanese singing persona Hatsune Miku. Aside from it being his birthday, he’s also very kindly given me many a ride home from La Fontana after NerdHQ meetups, so it was time to give something back!

This is made straight from a pattern to be quite honest. I Googled all over and was surprised that there aren’t actually that many Miku crochet patterns considering how popular I gather she is. I found a few but none I liked. Eventually I came across this video, and in the comments I found a link to the actual pattern. Which was in Spanish. I hunted around but the only English version I could find was this one. I don’t really understand patterns that use symbols so honestly I just found it kinda confusing… In the end I found a list online of Spanish crochet terms, Google translated the regular text of the pattern, did a few ‘search and replaces’ in Word for the crochet terms, and created my own English pattern.  There were a few points that were a bit iffy with the translation, but otherwise it was easy enough. She was fun to make – my other recent projects have been a lot of repetition, so it was satisfying to make something where each piece was pretty small and completed quickly.

Julia’s Gallery Updates – Firefly

Another gallery update, here’s my Firefly dolls! All made for the Vancouver Can’t Stop the Serenity charity auctions on various years.

Mal, Kaylee, Jayne, and Zoe dolls made for the Can’t Stop the Serenity charity auction a few years back.  Using Pixelated Mushroom’s Doctor Who pattern as a base.

Mini!Mal,
Kaylee, Jayne, and Zoe dolls, for a different year’s Can’t Stop the
Serenity auction. Kaylee had a little tag with her that we got signed by
Jewel Staite before the auction!

I asked my friend who organizes the even to take a picture of Jewel holding the doll she just signed – and then I printed out the picture and took it to Phoenix Comic Con with me a few weeks later where I had Jewel sign the photo. Of her holding a doll that I made that she signed. Layers! It now lives on my fridge.

Minion!Mal,
Kaylee, and Jayne for this year’s Can’t Stop the Serenity auction.
Minion!Kaylee had a little tag signed by Jewel again. 🙂 Maybe one of these days I’ll see her at a con again and get her to sign this picture lol.

Julia’s Gallery Updates – Doctor Who

Continuing to get all my dolls posted on here… Doctor Who!

My first
crochet project – TARDIS! I didn’t really know what I was doing, ie. I
never flipped my work so that the good side was facing out, so the
entire thing is the wrong side. I didn’t even realize at the time that
there WAS a right vs wrong side. And the embroidery is… kinda special.

Another early project – an Ood! For a friend who really liked the Ood. I used a Cthulhu pattern as a base (this one from Cthulhu Crochet to be exact) and then kinda just winged it as I went.

Another early doll, the 11th Doctor using Pixelated Mushroom’s 11th Doctor pattern
10th and 11th Doctors for FanExpo Vancouver 2014 (they were bought by two young sisters, it was super cute)
Smaller 11th Doctor for FanExpo Vancouver 2015

Smaller 10th Doctor for FanExpo Vancouver 2015
Larger
10th and 11th Doctors for FanExpo Vancouver 2015 (the design for these
is inspired by the Pixelated Mushroom ones, but they’re actually fairly
different when you see them in person – different shaped feet, and
they’re smaller and less cuddly/floppy. I wrote them up from scratch,
but since I’d made a few of her dolls before, the look was definitely
inspired by them)

Jack Harkness doll for FanExpo Vancouver 2015
Little TARDIS – made for a friend’s birthday
Sonic
Screwdriver – for my geeky friend’s baby shower! Because it’s never too
young to teach her daughter to be the next Doctor. Pattern from Louie’s Loops.

Julia’s Gallery updates – Marvel

Hi everyone! Sorry for the long delay between posts – I was in Nova Scotia in September (expect lots of Groot photos from that trip at some point), and October… well honestly I don’t really have an excuse, other than the fact that I was trying to get a bunch of projects done and just haven’t gotten around to the blog. That’s changing today – I’m spending the day getting photos of all my dolls (from the old to the new) posted into our Gallery so they are all archived and easy to find. And while I do that, I figured I might as well make each page into a new post as well (with extra comments/notes and some bonus silly pictures that I didn’t include in the gallery).

First up – Marvel!

Roughly
chronological from older to newer. The older ones are more likely to be
made from someone else’s pattern (I’ve included links/credit for all of
those ones), or to be lopsided. Or both.

Older dolls

My first Captain America doll – based on Pixelated Mushroom’s Doctor Who dolls pattern
He’s super floppy and his hair isn’t sewn down so it goes flying all over the place, but I think it’s part of his charm. 😉
Loki – made using this pattern
The Avengers preparing to take down Loki…

…but Loki is victorious!
Hawkeye – the first in a series of small Avengers dolls I made a few years back. They’re all a bit funny shaped; I was winging it and I made their torsos too round… so this is basically a series of Avengers dolls who have let themselves go to seed a bit.

Thor

Thor and Loki hanging out
Iron Man

Captain America – he’s definitely the most chubby of the lot lol. Oops!
Tony and Steve hanging out

At some point I made a second Loki doll as a birthday present for a friend – they’re surrounding Thor! And he still can’t tell which is the real one…

FanExpo 2014 dolls – these were all for sale at our FanExpo Vancouver booth in 2014

Bucky / The Winter Soldier

Captain America
Bucky and Steve <3

Bucky cuddles, awwwww…

FanExpo 2015 dolls – these were all for sale at our FanExpo Vancouver booth in 2015

Captain
America Minion – I decided partway through the con that I couldn’t bear
to sell him because he’s too cute, so I stuck a sold sign on him and
kept him. 😉

Thor
Loki

Thor and Loki

Captain
America – a definite improvement over the first couple… this little
guy didn’t sell and I think I’ll just keep him for myself now, I’ve
become attached to him. 😉

Bucky / The Winter Soldier

Steve and Bucky
Baby
Groot! I made 2 large Groots that were wired and stuck into real pots,
and 5 small Groots that are just cuddly and have nothing pointy or hard.
The first large Groot was made using a dark brown yarn because that’s
what I had in the house, but I didn’t really like how it turned out so I
made the rest with a light brown which I think looks better.
I
made 4 of the small Groots to start with, and had sold 3 of them by the
end of the first day… so I spent all of day 2 at the booth
frantically making one more (all 5 were gone by Sunday). Groot was super
popular!
Groots in a Groot bag, on their way to the convention (the Groot bag was purchased from the awesome people over at Unicorn Empire when I went to Emerald City Comic Con a few weeks prior)

Misc others

Rogue from X-Men (commission)
Wolverine – birthday present for a friend

Thor Minion – birthday present for another friend

Thor Minion and Captain America Minion!

My first Groot, made from this pattern at Smartapple Creations.
It was maybe 2 weeks after the movie came out, and my friend’s birthday
was coming up – and she LOVED Groot. So I googled ‘crochet Groot’ out
of curiousity, thinking no way had someone already made a doll never
mind a pattern… and this popped up. Yay! My video of her opening the
doll and screaming is one of my favourite things. 😉

Ok
this isn’t really a crochet doll but I think he’s cute… I got a
stuffed moose given to me by some supplier at work (this is what happens
when your job is selling tours in Canada!) and for whatever reason I
decided to A. name him Bucky, and B. crochet him a little Winter Soldier
arm and give him a mask. He lives in my desk drawer at work and makes
me happy. Bucky Moose!!

That’s it for now, but stay tuned! I have a few nifty Avengers-related projects coming soon…
